This document translates the influence research in SAVAGE-HANDOFF-DESIGN-001 into specific, actionable decisions. If a decision here seems like a strong position, the reasoning behind it is in the companion document under the matching section.
The specification operates in priority order. Regulatory and label law requirements come first. The constraint register in the influence document comes second. The decisions here come third. Anything not specified is open to the designer, subject to the review process in Section 13.
This is Rev A, proposed for your review. A small number of scope questions, primarily around brand architecture, budget tier, and packaging intent, need your input before final artwork begins. Those questions are called out where they arise in the document.
Savage is not a butcher shop, not a wildlife brand, and not a supplement. The reference frame is the clinical anatomical plate: scientific rendering, inspection marks, exact language, recorded data, zero decoration.
The category's central problem is that the honest form of the product is whole prey and the buyer has a disgust response to raw flesh. The name Savage forecloses the usual escape route of softness and humor. The specimen plate resolves the tension because a labeled anatomical diagram reads as authoritative rather than gruesome. It also gives the brand's strongest and least copyable argument, no fruits or vegetables, a native visual form.
Every asset is tested against that sentence at the gate in Section 13.
ink is warm-black rather than pure black by deliberate choice. Pure black reads cold and, in this category, aggressive. Do not substitute #000000 anywhere in the system.
Each protein owns one hue permanently. The lock does not change across format, size, or channel.

Base is for fills, bands, lids, and large solid areas only. Light is for type and line work set on ink. Dark is for type and line work set on bone. Never set small type in a Base value on ink.
| Excluded | Reason |
|---|---|
| Any green | Signals vegetable. The brand's own argument is that produce belongs in kibble marketing, not in a cat. Using green contradicts the primary wedge. |
| Any saturated red or blood-adjacent crimson | Signals blood. Triggers the disgust response the system exists to defuse. |
Pure black #000000 | Reads cold and aggressive. |
Pure white #FFFFFF | Reads clinical-sterile rather than premium, and fails the freezer contrast constraint. |
Approximate surface allocation on any pack face or page: ink 70% — bone 25% — protein accent 5%. The accent is a wayfinding signal, not a mood. Any composition where the accent exceeds roughly 15% of surface has failed the system and is rejected at the gate.
| Pairing | Minimum | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Body and panel copy | 4.5:1 | All ingredient panels, benefit copy, web body |
| Large type (24px / 18pt+) | 3:1 | Headlines, protein names, pack faces |
| Non-text UI and rules | 3:1 | Dividers, icon strokes, form borders |
Every pairing must be verified with a contrast checker before artwork release. Do not assume a pairing passes because it appears in this document.
Values above are sRGB, authored for screen and for the freezer-case digital mock. Do not auto-convert to CMYK. Warm near-blacks and plum in particular shift badly under naive conversion. Pantone matches must be selected by the print vendor from physical draw-downs on the actual substrate, once the substrate is confirmed (likely metallized or matte-laminate film for frozen application).
Final typeface selection depends on scope. Both a licensed option and an open-source fallback are specified below so work can begin at either level.
| Register | Job | Licensed recommendation | Open-source fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display serif | Wordmark, headlines, protein names | Domaine Display Condensed, or Canela Condensed | Instrument Serif |
| Grotesque | Benefit copy, navigation, all ingredient and regulatory panels | Sohne, or Neue Haas Grotesk | Inter |
| Mono | Lot numbers, batch data, sourcing claims, inspection stamp | Sohne Mono | JetBrains Mono |
- The display face never appears in an ingredient panel, guaranteed analysis, or feeding guideline. The chicken panel alone runs to roughly thirty items. That is a legibility engineering problem and it belongs to the grotesque.
- The mono face never carries body copy. Its entire job is to make proof data read as recorded rather than marketed.
- Two weights maximum per register in any single composition.
- No faux bold, faux italic, or artificial condensing at any point.
Let W = cap height of the wordmark on a given face. Scale all pack elements proportionally so the system holds across packet, tub, and carton without re-derivation.
| Element | Size | Register | Color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wordmark | W (16 to 20% of face height) | Display | bone |
| Protein name | 0.50 W | Display | protein Light |
| Format lozenge | 0.22 W | Grotesque 500 | ink on protein Base |
| Benefit stack | 0.20 W, min 10pt absolute | Grotesque 400 | bone |
| Proof badges | 0.16 W | Grotesque 500 | ash-light |
| Ingredient panel | 7pt target, 6pt floor | Grotesque 400 | bone on ink |
| Mono data line | 6.5pt | Mono 400 | ash |
Ingredient panel: tracking +10 units, leading 120% of size minimum. Never set below 6pt regardless of copy volume.
Base 16px, modular ratio 1.25.
| Token | Size / Line height | Register | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| display-xl | 61 / 64 | Display | Homepage hero only |
| display-l | 49 / 54 | Display | Section openers |
| h1 | 39 / 45 | Display | Page titles |
| h2 | 31 / 37 | Display | Major sections |
| h3 | 25 / 32 | Grotesque 500 | Subsections |
| body-l | 20 / 32 | Grotesque 400 | Lead paragraphs |
| body | 16 / 27 | Grotesque 400 | Default |

| data | 13 / 18, tracking +40 | Mono 400 | Lot, batch, sourcing, badge text |
Left-aligned throughout, on pack and on screen. The only permitted centered text in the entire system is the type inside the inspection stamp (Section 6.2). No justified text. No centered headlines.
The wordmark commission depends on one question we'd like your input on: whether the brand architecture uses "Savage" as a parent name with a species descriptor, or "Savage Cat Food" as a single integrated lockup. This affects the wordmark's scope and proportions. Everything in Section 5 applies once that question is settled.
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Construction | Custom drawn, not a licensed face set as-is |
| Concept | One proprietary letterform detail carrying an anatomical or predatory idea. Candidate sites: the V apex, the G spur, the terminal E of SAVAGE (claw, fang, tail, or cut mark). Restraint is mandatory; the detail must be legible as intent, not as decoration. |
| Deliverable formats | Primary horizontal, stacked, and monogram or single-glyph mark |
| Reproduction floor | Must survive blind emboss, single-color foil, machine embroidery on a retailer apron, and 16px favicon |
| Registered mark | (R) placement resolved inside the lockup at draw time, never applied afterward. Trademark usage is Savage Cat Food(R). |
Minimum clear space on all four sides equals the cap height of the first letter. Nothing enters that zone, including pack seams, die-cut edges, and other brand elements.
| Application | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Print, horizontal lockup | 22mm wide |
| Print, stacked lockup | 14mm wide |
| Digital, horizontal | 120px wide |
| Digital, monogram | 24px |
Below the horizontal minimum, switch to stacked. Below the stacked minimum, switch to monogram.
Do not: rotate, outline, apply gradient, apply shadow or glow, stretch or condense, recolor outside ink / bone / a single protein accent, place on photography without a solid scrim, add a tagline inside the clear space, or reconstruct the lockup from separate elements.
The signature asset. Highest distinctiveness and highest execution risk in the system.
| Attribute | Specification |
|---|---|
| Style | Veterinary anatomy plate. Schematic and instructive, never illustrative or predatory. |
| Line | Single weight, no tapering, no fill. 1.5pt at 100mm reproduction width, scaled proportionally. |
| Color | bone on ink, or ink on bone. No protein accent. Never red. |
| Content | Labeled muscle, bone, marrow, heart, liver, glandular tissue |
| Callouts | Numbered in Mono, connected by hairline leaders, labels in Grotesque 500 |
| Prohibited | Blood, wounds, open viscera, bared teeth, motion or violence lines, distress texture |
The rendering brief matters more than the concept. Brief the illustrator on the anatomy-plate reference explicitly and reject any pass that reads as hunting illustration. Secondary use: retailer wall poster, site hero module, and shelf talker.
| Attribute | Specification |
|---|---|
| Form | Circular or oval, single color |
| Content | WHOLE PREY / NO HPP / SOURCED USA, set in Mono |
| Color | bone on ink, or protein Base on bone |
| Texture | Light letterpress or ink-bleed texture permitted above 20mm. Clean vector below 20mm. |
| Floor | Legible at 12mm print, 48px digital |
Geometric rather than illustrated. Sits in the proof badge row. Nobody in raw cat food currently owns this symbol. It encodes a genuine process difference: no High Pressure Processing, which the brand argues damages helpful bacteria and alters taste.
The exclusion list set as a deliberate typographic block rather than a bulleted afterthought. Content: no soy, wheat gluten, corn, rice, fruits, vegetables, kelp, algae, GMOs, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or BPA. Set in Grotesque with each excluded item on its own line, ash-light on ink, with a single rule above.
Paw prints, whiskers as decoration, cat silhouettes, claw slashes, distressed or grunge texture, ribbons, banners, laurel wreaths, badges implying awards not actually held, and any produce imagery.
One rule, written down, so any freelancer can execute it without an art director present. This is the mechanism that makes the direction survive its authors.
| Attribute | Specification |
|---|---|
| Lighting | Single-source directional. Deep shadow permitted and encouraged. Never flat lifestyle lighting, never ring light. |
| Background | ink or bone seamless, or a real kitchen or floor surface. No styled props, no rugs, no plants, no toys in frame. |
| Framing | Tight. Crop into the animal. Avoid full-room environmental shots. |
| Food in frame | Food is never photographed alone. If food appears, the cat appears. |
| Human presence | Hands permitted. Faces avoided unless a specific campaign requires them. |
| Post | Neutral to warm grade. No heavy filters, no vignette, no film-grain overlay. |
Raw meat styled as a hero on its own, blood or fluid, any image where the product reads as gore, cats in costume, cats in baskets, and any image that would not pass the governing sentence in Section 2.3.
We'd like to audit the existing product shot library before recommending a new photography commission. Existing shots may satisfy packaging and product page needs even if new art direction is funded for campaign work. Please let us know whether the full library from the press kit is accessible.
Declarative, technical, unapologetic. Short sentences. Name the mechanism rather than the feeling.
| Never use | Always use |
|---|---|
| fur baby, kitty, pawsome, purrfect, tummy, fur family, meow-based wordplay, any pun on cat | cat, carnivore, obligate carnivore, prey, diet, bone, marrow, organ, muscle |
Would a veterinary nutritionist sign this sentence? If it would embarrass one, cut it.
The brand's sharpest copy asset is the argument that produce imagery in pet food is aimed at the health-conscious human rather than the carnivorous cat. Use it. It is the one claim competitors cannot copy without changing their formulation.
8px base unit. Permitted values: 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 96, 128. Nothing between.
| Element | Radius |
|---|---|
| Panels, cards, containers | 0 |
| Form controls, buttons | 2px |
| Format lozenge | Pill (radius = half height) |
| Inspection stamp | Circular |
The system is sharp by intent. Rounded corners soften the brand in exactly the wrong direction.
12 columns, 24px gutter. Max content width 1200px. Margins 48px desktop, 32px tablet, 24px mobile. Breakpoints 640 / 1024 / 1280.
Fixed on every SKU, every format, every size, permanently. This fixed geometry is what makes a twelve-SKU range read as one brand at six feet.
| Protein | Color lock | Packet (chunks) | Tub (smooth) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken | amber | Yes | Yes |
| Rabbit + Lamb | plum | Yes | Yes |
| Duck | teal | Yes | Yes |
The full size ladder per format needs to be confirmed before dieline work. Packaging scope is one of the questions we'd like your input on.
Color is spent on protein, so format is signalled structurally. Packets use a die-cut window revealing the diced muscle chunks. Tubs carry no window; full protein Base lid, designed for the overhead freezer read. Both formats carry an explicit format lozenge: packets say WITH CHUNKS, tubs say SMOOTH - FOR DENTAL SENSITIVITY. This is a clinical distinction a caregiver must get right on first purchase.
| Panel | Content |
|---|---|
| Front | Wordmark, protein name, format lozenge, benefit stack (3-4 lines: odor, waste, coat, oral health), proof badge row |
| Top | Wordmark and protein name repeated. Mandatory. Serves the chest-freezer overhead read. |
| Side A | Whole prey diagram or inspection stamp |
| Side B | Anti-ingredient panel |
| Back | Ingredient list, guaranteed analysis, AAFCO statement, feeding guidelines, handling and thaw instructions, lot and batch in Mono, contact and locator URL |
- Product detail page, per SKU
- Store locator
- Retailer training portal
- Why raw / the argument page carrying the produce counter-argument
- Comparison module: Savage versus kibble, and Savage versus HPP-processed raw
- Buttons: 2px radius,
boneoninkprimary, protein accent reserved for in-SKU context only - Cards: 0 radius, hairline
ashrule at 0.5px, no shadow anywhere in the system - Tables: hairline rules, Mono for any numeric column
- Proof badges: reusable component, Mono label,
ash-light, never colored - No carousels on product pages. Stack content.
Independent of any rebrand decision, three items ship first:
- Remove the
logo-ipsumplaceholder partner logos currently live on the site. - Obtain or recreate a vector master of the existing logo. The 2016 PNG on the press kit may be the only asset currently available.
- Rebuild the store locator and retailer training pages. The site itself names in-store as the recommended purchase path and the business runs through independent pet retail.
Independent retail is the stated recommended channel, staff are the sales force, and in-store samples are the conversion mechanism. The system must produce these assets, not only packaging.
| Asset | Spec notes |
|---|---|
| Freezer cling | Reverse-print, ink ground, wordmark plus one proof mark. Legible at 2m. |
| Shelf talker | Protein-locked. One benefit line, one proof badge. |
| Whole prey poster | The diagram at A2 and A3. The single highest-value staff-education and merchandising piece. |
| Sample card | Handed out with in-store samples. Mono lot line, locator QR, one benefit stack. |
| Retailer one-pager | Product matrix, format distinction, margin and ordering, the produce counter-argument for staff to repeat. |
| Staff training visuals | Feeds the existing retailer training portal. |
Every piece of work passes through four gates before it reaches you. The process is designed to catch the failure modes that tend to slip through in this category.
Does it make predator read as premium and competent, rather than gore, edge, or aggression? Any reviewer may fail an asset here without further justification.
No packaging concept is approved on a hero render. It is approved on a realistic freezer-case mock, shot or rendered through glass, alongside Primal, Stella and Chewy's, Instinct, and Vital Essentials. This is the only environment the design has to win in, and it is where most premium pet design quietly fails.
- Accent color under 15% of surface
- Lockup order and position match Section 9.4 exactly
- Display face absent from all panel and regulatory copy
- Ingredient panel at or above 6pt with +10 tracking
- All color pairings verified against Section 3.5 minimums
- Top panel carries wordmark and protein name
- Format lozenge present and correct for the SKU
- No prohibited iconography (Section 6.5)
- No excluded hues (Section 3.3)
- Legible at 2m through glass
- Zero placeholder content
Client's regulatory reviewer signs the panel copy. Design does not clear label law.
